This course, "Electrical Safety & Risk Management", is designed to instill essential knowledge for working smart and building safe. It emphasizes effective communication of electrical hazards between employers and employees to prevent accidents, ensuring participants confidently recognize and avoid unsafe conditions, identify federal regulations, and master Job Safety Planning.

Upon completion, you will be able to:

  • Understand the physiology of electric shock and the 'Electrocution Triangle'.
  • Identify types of electrical injuries: electrocution, shock, burns, and falls.
  • Comprehend OSHA's regulatory framework, including the General Duty Clause and Multi-Employer Worksite Citation Policy.
  • Distinguish between OSHA Subpart S for General Industry and Subpart K for Construction.
  • Define "Qualified" and "Competent" persons according to OSHA and NFPA 70E.
  • Address hazards of overhead and underground power lines, including the '20 Foot Rule' and 'Step Potential'.
  • Apply principles of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) and Assured Equipment Grounding Conductor Programs.
  • Select and properly use extension cords based on AWG, marking codes, and OSHA requirements.
  • Implement Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures for controlling hazardous energy.
  • Execute electrical safety-related work practices, job safety plans, and job briefings.
  • Conduct comprehensive shock and arc flash risk assessments, establishing approach boundaries.
  • Select and utilize appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for electrical hazards.
  • Handle and inspect insulated hand tools and electrical test instruments safely.
  • Understand the requirements for energized electrical work permits.
